Facial Expressions

Psychologists and famed microexpression expert Paul Ekman identify seven main emotional facial expressions:

Happiness: or enjoyment, an opening expression of pleasure.
Sadness
sorrow grief or loss, lowered and defeated energy
Fear
sense of danger, similar to surprise in its arousal, but a distinct attempt to flee or protect, fight or flight
Anger
the desire to destroy obstacles, negative outcomes to expectations. Arousal, intimidation, and preparation for physicality
Surprise
Briefest of expressions, reaction to something unexpected, opens all senses and shuts down emotional communication, replaced in seconds with the emotion(s) resulting from identification of the surprise.
Disgust
Response to a poison or toxic substance, perceived or imaginary - the facial expression and body posture of preparing to vomit.
Contempt
An asymmetry signaled solely by the mouth being pulled to one side, always indicates superiority and disdain.
