Facial Expressions
Psychologists and famed microexpression expert Paul Ekman identify seven main emotional facial expressions:
- Happiness: or enjoyment, an opening expression of pleasure.
- Sadness
- sorrow grief or loss, lowered and defeated energy
- Fear
- sense of danger, similar to surprise in its arousal, but a distinct attempt to flee or protect, fight or flight
- Anger
- the desire to destroy obstacles, negative outcomes to expectations. Arousal, intimidation, and preparation for physicality
- Surprise
- Briefest of expressions, reaction to something unexpected, opens all senses and shuts down emotional communication, replaced in seconds with the emotion(s) resulting from identification of the surprise.
- Disgust
- Response to a poison or toxic substance, perceived or imaginary - the facial expression and body posture of preparing to vomit.
- Contempt
- An asymmetry signaled solely by the mouth being pulled to one side, always indicates superiority and disdain.
